D&AD Typo Circle Supplements.
So my chosen three talkers to create my supplements on are;
Angus Hyland
Studio8
Jonathan Barnbrook
The photographs below show my final books. The front and back cover have been laser cut into mount board, and the 160gsm paper gives the supplements a nice, quality feel.
What a complete nightmare uploading them to D&AD was, every spread by JPEG…. Oh well, they are done now!!
D&AD Typographical Posters
YES!! Ministry of Sound is FINALLY complete!!
Don’t get me wrong, it was a great brief, but my word the ‘tweekings’ took a long time. So I submitted (with a lot of problems) my posters to D&AD. And here is my explanation…
My set of three typographically-focused A2 outdoor posters are part of a campaign named “Saturday [is] Your Day”, celebrating the time you have to...

Typo Circle
Right, so as well as my Honours work (currently the Ch4 vintage), my dissertation (definitely need to start), my Ministry of Sound Posters (nearly done)…. I now have another project; Typo Circle. Here’s the brief so you know what I’m blogging about….
Brief
As a supplement to it’s magazine, ‘Circular’, The Circle wish to produce a series of special books/publications on...
#2HP Vintage Collection
From looking at my vintage collection of images, I feel I have chosen the selection from my own point of view; the things I like and that I feel are beautiful. Because of this my collage pages are very pretty, girly and delicate, which is one element of ‘vintage’, however my audience is also male so I need to rethink!!
Hons Project Two.
So after lots of considering and lots of back and forth, I’ve decided to call the new channel 4 programme ‘vintage’. This leaves a lot to the imagination, and so much imagery comes to mind just by even thinking of the word. Although this is aimed at over 60s, and what we consider ‘vintage’ now is what they will have grown up with, it also doesn’t single out this...
Jonathan Barnbrook work continues...
After the book design, this seemed to get Barnbrook other work…
He designed for Hirst’s ‘Pharmacy Restaurant’ and met David Bowie through Hirst. Funny stories with this connection but not allowed to be blogged! Barnbrook designed Bowie’s album cover Heathen, and used the typography upside down to show anti-religion. Although some shops were not keen on this as they...
Jonathan Barnbrook- Damien Hirst
What a beautiful book! I would like one of these!
Barnbrook understood what was wrong with the way artists work was shown, and corrected this in Hirst’s book. He wanted to represent the work well, but possibly had to include a little too much, but that was needed in the criteria. This book was something very new in the art world at the time. The choice of colour was very important to allow...
Jonathan Barnbrook Talk
The way Barnbrook described different typefaces was brilliant, and we were told a lot of stories not allowed to be blogged/ tweeted!
I liked the ‘Mason’ typeface story though… Formally named ‘Manson’ after a serial killer, and after masses of complaints had to be renamed. J.B. liked the idea of justifying using the type named after a killed. It sounded elegant but...
Jonathan Barnbrook Swearing
Barnbrook obviously has a little soft spot for swearing as quite a large portion of his talk was on this topic.
He firstly talked about the evolving of swear words and their ability to be aggressive, erotic, beautiful etc. The way in which people interrupt these words have changed over the years. Typography plays a large part in this, a beautifully designed swear word can have a completely...
Fuck it. The fucking fucker’s fucking fucked.

Jonathan Barnbrook Guest Speaker
I have just returned from LJMU Art & Design Academy after a lecture from guest speaker Jonathan Barnbrook. A brilliant talk, I am definitely pleased that I went, I shall look through my notes and blog later.
Hons Project Two.
Okay, so project two for my Honours work is going to be a D&AD brief for Channel 4, Here’s a little summary of the Brief…
The Challenge
Channel 4 have an array of channels
that cater for an array of audiences;
from E4 to More 4.
We would like to launch a new
channel specifically for our older 60
plus audience. This would consist
of programmes that challenge our
audience in...
Hons Project One.
So my hons will be made of many little project, firstly let me introduce you to the actual Hons…
“Advertising does not sell things, it only changes the way people think or feel”. Jeremy Bullmore
Pretty much discussing this and the topic of advertising. Really need to re-write the actual proposal to include different issues.
Project One: Hospice of the Good Shepherd.
