The photographs below show my final books. The front and back cover have been laser cut into mount board, and the 160gsm paper gives the supplements a nice, quality feel.

What a complete nightmare uploading them to D&AD was, every spread by JPEG…. Oh well, they are done now!!

D&AD Typographical Posters

YES!! Ministry of Sound is FINALLY complete!!

Don’t get me wrong, it was a great brief, but my word the ‘tweekings’ took a long time. So I submitted (with a lot of problems) my posters to D&AD. And here is my explanation…

My set of three typographically-focused A2 outdoor posters are part of a campaign named “Saturday [is] Your Day”, celebrating the time you have to enjoy for yourself, and helping you through a week that is taken up by work, studying, family, chores and much more.

The information in the posters have been designed inside boxes, representing a few different elements; the organized and repetitive daily tasks, the box you are ready to escape, as well as ‘The Box’ inside Ministry of Sound. I chose to use Helvetica as my typeface as the information needed to be easy to read, especially from a moving vehicle and/or at a distance. The hierarchy of type works as planned, which was easy to portray with a plain typeface. These posters will be placed in specific areas relating to the campaign; work places, universities, transport used for journeys to and from weekly commitments, amongst others. The displaying of the advertisements is important to the campaign; therefore I wanted the location to also show through. The posters are as vinyl’s and can stick to any surface whilst showing a reminder of what they will be able to forget on their day that is Saturday! I have also included smaller sized posters, that will be easier for others to share with friends. They could stick them to other colleagues or peers desks or laptops, resulting in free marketing for Ministry of Sound!

Typo Circle

Right, so as well as my Honours work (currently the Ch4 vintage), my dissertation (definitely need to start), my Ministry of Sound Posters (nearly done)…. I now have another project; Typo Circle. Here’s the brief so you know what I’m blogging about….

Brief

As a supplement to it’s magazine, ‘Circular’, The Circle wish to produce a series of special books/publications on specific people who have given talks for The Circle. These publications can be of any size & format but should work as a series. They do not have to be like a magazine but should be thought of as books or ‘special editions’. You will need to research through the Circle website who has given talks to establish who you would like to feature (www.typocircle.com). The style of the publications must NOT be a copy or pastiche of the designer you are featuring. But should be a distinct & original typographic solution that would sit well with the other material the Circle has produced.

Background

The Typographic Circle has existed since the 1970s when it was a started as the Type Directors Club of London. Its aim is to promote all aspects of typographic excellence & experimentation without prejudice. The Circle is also a social organisation, which is a very important aspect to its success. There are no criteria for being able to become a member, only an interest in typography. The Circle has achieved much of this success by hosting regular talks featuring a huge cross-section of practitioners from the world of typography, design & advertising. In addition a magazine has been published once a year to help promote see events, called ‘Circular’.

Deliverables

Choose 3 designers, writers or typographers who have given talks for the Circle and produce a Cover & at least 4 spreads on each individual. You will need to include the Circle’s logo on the cover. Consideration should be given to format and size but a digital approach would also be acceptable.

Upload images of your work. You may also post a supportting physical copy of your work and/or upload a zip folder of supporting interative work.

From looking at my vintage collection of images, I feel I have chosen the selection from my own point of view; the things I like and that I feel are beautiful. Because of this my collage pages are very pretty, girly and delicate, which is one element of ‘vintage’, however my audience is also male so I need to rethink!!
